 Anthony Armstrong Jones was born  Ronnie Jones on June 2nd 1949 in Ada Oklahoma. The one-time professional golfer was discovered by Conway Twitty while singing on a weekly television show in Oklahoma City and toured with the Conway Twitty show for several years. He was signed to the Chart Records label in 1968 and, with the efforts of producer Cliff Williamson, brought covers of hit pop tunes to the country charts. He had gold records with "Proud Mary", "Take A Letter Maria", & "Sweet Caroline". In 1973 he moved over to Epic Records and had another hit with Jim Croce's "Bad, Bad, LeRoy Brown", then faded from charts. He continued to tour regularly and recorded a couple of singles for the Homa Records label in 1974. Since 1992 he ran his own honky-tonk club, Proud Mary, in Shreveport, Louisiana until his death on June 16th, 1996. The cause of death is unknown at this point, but he was purported to be a diabetic. Ronnie's sister, Beverly Jones Johnson (as Beverly Eagle), was vocalist in Vince Gill's first band, Mountain Smoke.
